Do You Know if Your Doctor Has Malpractice Insurance?

Tuesday August 12, 2008
Malpractice insurance is important since it helps financially protect you against any negligent mistakes your doctor may make. It is not just financially important for individuals, but for our country as a whole since if a doctor was sued and did not carry malpractice insurance, then they may have to file bankruptcy, which of course, comes out of your pocket.

Most states require malpractice insurance and most doctors do carry it. But, unfortunately, southern Florida has become quite a popular place for doctors whom do not want to carry malpractice insurance. According to www.sun-sentinel.com, "South Florida has become the nation's capital for doctors without medical malpractice insurance, experts say, leaving patients at risk of getting little financial help for care after a medical error. Nearly one-quarter of doctors in Broward and Palm Beach counties, more than one-third in the Miami area, and one-eighth statewide opt out of malpractice insurance under a state law that lets them go without coverage, a state physician database shows."

There are many reasons why choosing your health insurance plan doctor should not be a quick decision, but a researched choice based on the doctor's credentials and performance along with how the doctor will work with your individual health insurance or family health insurance plan. Here are some steps to help you choose the best doctor for your health insurance needs.
