Fax Machine Insurance Scams

Tuesday April 15, 2008
The Maine Bureau of Insurance wants to warn consumers about a fax machine insurance scam. Although this has been found in Maine, it is a valuable warning for all of us since scams such as these can happen in any state. According to www.kepmecurrent.com, the "scam involves telemarketers soliciting personal information, including bank account numbers, over the phone. Callers claim they are enrolling consumers in affordable health insurance. The so-called insurer does not exist or is not licensed to sell insurance in Maine."

Here are some tips on how to spot and avoid these scams:
Tips Provided by the Maine Bureau of Insurance and www.keepmecurrent.com

• "Verify that the company is legitimate." To find information on licensed insurance companies in your state see the Insurance Commissioners Quick List

• "Never give out personal information over the phone. Be suspicious of anyone on the phone who asks for your Social Security Number, bank account number, or credit card information."

• "Be suspicious of health insurance plans with premiums dramatically lower for a similar product on the market."

• "If you have any concerns or questions, call the Bureau of Insurance."

• "Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
