"The Holiday": House Swapping - What About Insurance?
Saturday February 24, 2007
"The Holiday," a popular starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, reveals a great way to get a great vacation. In the movie, the characters switch homes during their vacations. This is something that can be done in real life and many people currently do house swapping by listing their home available to swap on numerous web sites. But, what about insurance coverage?
If you are interested in house swapping for your next vacation, you do need to check with your insurance company first to make sure everything will still be covered and if not, to make sure you obtain additional coverages if needed. Check with all applicable policies such as your home owners, renters, and auto insurance.

Hi Bobbie
I agree with Laura’s comment about using a reputable company and for the two parties prior to the swap to communicate at length before going ahead with the actual swap.
You are also correct in saying that you should inform your insurance company prior to your house swap. Most house insurances provide cover for invited guests – but it is always best to double check with your insurer. Statistically your house is more likely to be burgled when it is unoccupied. If you live in a rented property – you must also ask your landlord for his permission.
At http://www.ukholidayswapshop.co.uk , apart from the odd broken wine glass, our members (like all house swappers in general) are very respectful of other people’s property.
