I Love Dogs...but Does My Insurance Company?

Follow me on:

We have 3 dogs-a big 80 pound female boxer and 2 Heinz 57's (mixed breed dogs). I was thinking today about how much safer I feel with my dogs around. Although our boxer is a big baby, one of our mixed breed dogs just loves us but hates everyone else. That may not be the type of dog everyone is looking for, but I like the comfort of knowing he is probably not going to be nice to an intruder.

In most cases though, if you just own a dog, you are keeping yourself from a home intrusion risk. If you were to talk to a convicted or current (let's hope not!) home intruder, they would probably tell you that they are more than happy to leave your home alone if you have any type of dog that just yaps. So, although I like having my aggressive dog, it is probably the little yappy one that keeps intruders away from my home.

Since statistics show that home intruders are more likely to pass by your home if you own a dog, then just having a dog would keep your insurance company happy, right? Unfortunately, that is not the case.

If you own a dangerous dog breed, you may be refused for insurance or have to pay more. It's the liability portion of the insurance policy that insurance companies are concerned about.

A solution? Just stick with the Heinz 57's at your local pound!
