Your Insurance Policy - Did Your Insurance Broker or Insurance Agent Explain It?
Making Sure Your Insurance Policy Covers What You Need

By Bobbie Sage, About.com

Now that you have your insurance policy, do you understand what it means? This is often a problem. Many people go to get their insurance policy and after letting the insurance agent or insurance broker prepare their insurance policy, they just walk out the door without a question. The same thing happens when one gets an online insurance quote and buys an insurance policy online.

It is important to understand your insurance policy and know what it covers. When it comes time to file your insurance claim, that is not the time you want to find out that you are not covered.

There are steps you can take to better understand what you paid for and to make sure you are covered for what you want in your insurance policy. First, it is always best to contact your insurance broker or insurance agent to better understand your particular policy. Here are some additional steps to follow in order to better understand your insurance policy:

Read your insurance policy.

The insurance policy is the written agreement between you and the insurer. If you don't have the coverages you wanted and paid for, it will be to late to complain about it once you file your claim.

Get help with understanding your insurance policy.

Before you walk out your insurance agent's door, or click your computer off after getting your insurance online, take the time to talk with the insurance agent or company about your policy. That is what you pay them for.

Find out what the time frame is that you have to review your policy.

Some policies provide a free look period (10 to 30 days after delivery of the policy) during which you may cancel your new insurance policy and get a refund.

Keep all receipts and transactions between you and the agent.

This is important if you decide to cancel your policy after your review of it.

Document all vocal and written statements between you and your agent.

It is possible that your insurance agent promised you a coverage but for many reasons, did not include the promised coverage in your new insurance policy. If you document all vocal and written statements between you and your agent, you have a good chance of getting that coverage if you need it when filing an insurance claim.
