Home Accident Anytime-Cleaning Project #2: Poisonous Home Chemicals

By Bobbie Sage, About.com

Poisonous home chemicals include items such as: Cleaning Products, Detergents, Bug Spray, and Pet Flea Collars. Also, be aware of overdose items such as Children's Medicine, Vitamins, and Toothpaste.

Many unneeded hospital visits, and insurance dollars, are preventable when a few simple steps are followed to keep your home safe from poisonous chemical accidents.

  • Go room to room and find every potential poisonous household item. Decide whether the items could be placed in a safer place.

  • While using any hazardous products, make sure children and pets stay away from the area during use and/or until all products are cleaned away and put back in a safe place.

  • Never place a hazardous product in any other container than the original.

  • Make sure hazardous household products are away from any heating elements or wet areas.

  • Always use proper protection while using hazardous products and wash hands immediately when finished.

  • Never mix hazardous products unless you are following the manufacture's instructions and if you do need to mix a product, do it outdoors in an open air area.

  • When applying skin pesticides such as bug repellant, apply in an open air area, follow manufacture's directions, and never apply near open skin areas such as the eyes or cuts.
