Home Accident Anytime-Cleaning Project #1: Carbon Monoxide and Fires

By Bobbie Sage, About.com

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that is deadly, and an unexpected fire can be devastating to your family and home. Follow the suggestions below to eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and fires from your home.

  • Make sure there are carbon monoxide and fire alarms on every floor of your home, near your furnace, in your kitchen, and near every bedroom.

  • Check all appliances and heating elements to make sure they are in good working order. Be aware of funny smells, soot, or heating flames that look different than normal and do not use the appliance until a professional has checked it.

  • When checking your appliances and heating elements, make sure nothing flammable is stacked up against them or anywhere near them where they could easily catch fire.

  • Remove and do not use any charcoal grills inside you home.

  • If you have a working chimney, this would be a good time to get it cleaned. You can hire a professional, or go to your local hardware store and find tools to clean it yourself.

  • If you don't have a kitchen exhaust fan, install one and always use it when cooking in the kitchen.

  • If you use kerosene heaters, or any other type of heating element that does not have a vent, NEVER use it while sleeping.

  • Keep an up-to-date, unused, fire extinguisher and fire blanket in areas such as the kitchen and near heating units and make sure everyone in the family knows where they are and how to use them.

  • Matches and lighters should only be used by adults and stored in a safe place. Children should be taught not to even pick-up a lighter or match but if one is found to tell an adult immediately so the adult can properly dispose of it or place it in a safe area.

  • Make a fire escape plan for your family and practice it. Make sure you have a "meeting place" away from the home outside, that everyone knows about, if you happen to get separated from your family.

Now that you have cleaned your home of carbon monoxide and fire risks, you project tomorrow will be Poisonous Home Chemicals.
