Although auto insurance is required in all states, there are many drivers (up to 25% in some areas) that still drive and do not carry insurance. It is obviously important to have uninsured motorists coverage to protect yourself against these drivers.
Uninsured motorists coverage provides protection not only against drivers who don't carry insurance but uninsured motorists coverage also includes: drivers who have insurance that does not meet the state minimum insurance laws, drivers who have insurance companies that are not able to pay such as companies that have went out of business, drivers whose insurance company chooses not to pay and hit and run drivers or drivers who cannot be identified.
It is important to have uninsured motorists coverage and to check with your current insurance policy to see what uninsured motorists coverage you have. Some states do require uninsured motorists coverage to be in every policy but in some states it is an additional coverage. You can check with your state insurance commissioner to see what the insurance laws are and insurance coverage requirements are in your state.
