Identity Theft Quiz

By Bobbie Sage, About.com

If you are following all of the guidelines below, you will be at a lower risk from being a victim of identity theft:

Do you check your credit report annually? This needs to be done to see if there are any signs of fraud. Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union are the ones to check and they are required to help you fix problems. You can also request that the credit bureaus put an alert on your credit history to prevent future fraud if you suspect something.

Do you keep your social security number on your drivers' license or in your wallet? No, No, please don't do this. Once a criminal has your social security number and all the other information on you drivers' license, they practically have everything they need. Don't keep your social security number anywhere in your wallet, car, or anywhere but a safe place at home..... and instead memorize it!

Do you throw your personal documents out in your trash? Yes, they do search the trash. This is one of the easiest ways to get information from someone. Get a paper shredder or tear everything up in very small pieces and try to distribute in multiple bags to prevent anyone from obtaining personal information or credit card numbers.

Do you leave bills in the mailbox for the mailman? Leaving bills out by the road waiting for the mailman is like handing a blank check right in the hands of a criminal. Here’s what happens: the mail is stolen, the check is cleaned up with some homemade chemicals, then the criminal has a fresh new check to write to themselves! Drop off your bills in a mailbox or directly to the post office instead. In addition, request that your bank hand deliver your statements and canceled checks to you personally.

When shopping or transferring personal information online do you make sure encryption software is used? This software allows your personal information to be sent without hacking criminals to view and steal it. If you are not sure... don't do it! Only use sites that are reputable and you trust or simply look for the 800 number and call in your personal information over the phone.
