A monitored home security system can save you on your home insurance costs but sometimes it takes more to keep unwanted people, such as thieves, safely away from your home.

Here are some good tricks to detract thieves from your house, especially if you are a woman or are elderly and living alone: Have a man say your answering machine greeting, get a large pair of men's work boots to put outside your door, add a man's name to your mailbox, put large dog dishes visible outside, and add a "beware of dog" sign to your doors and windows.
