Do you think your insurance company will start charging you more if you are overweight? It is already happening to some. According to www.iht.com, "Alabama, pushed to third in U.S. obesity rankings by high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods, is cracking down on state workers who are overweight. The state has given its 37,527 employees a year to start getting fit — or they'll pay $25 a month for insurance that otherwise is free. Alabama will be the first U.S. state to impose a surcharge on overweight state workers who do not work on slimming down. A handful of other states reward employees who adopt healthy behaviors."

There is no question that maintaining a healthy diet and weight will contribute to an individuals overall health. However, most people need clear incentives, other than “this will be good for you in the long run”. Lower health insurance premiums in the here and now will mean more individual participation in their overall health.
