It's Just Not Right

Recently I have learned that the federal government is putting restrictions on states' children's health care programs. Apparently they are concerned that families are dropping their insurance coverage and signing up for the state program so now the federal government is requiring that children must have not have health insurance for a year before they are eligible for the state program.

What? This is just not right. First, there are many, way too many struggling families that just don't know that their children could qualify for a state insurance program and have possibly been going into debt or going without some necessities just to pay for insurance... but then when they find out that they could have their children enrolled they are told that now they can't because they already have insurance? And, how many families will drop their insurance for a year on their children just to qualify?

We are the only industrialized country that does not provide a universal health care system and now it is sad that the federal government wants to take away what little health care coverages we do have for our low-income children.

State child health programs have ALWAYS had this rule. This is not new. The program was set up for uninsured children. There are working parents whose jobs do not offer any benefits at all. I have been on both sides of the fence. Right now, my children participate in a state health insurance program. I pay for a health plan now $120 per month for my son in college also. It is not easy to budget, but I do it. I cannot afford to pay for insurance for me or the other children. The premium for health benefits including my family was expensive too.
Many states have eligibility rules so the people who have no alternative to health benefits will be able to see the doctor or dentist. I am grateful my children have something. But let me say, the treatment by health professionals toward those who use state programs is undignified.
